A sacroiliac joint injection is an injection of local anesthetic and a medication into the sacroiliac joint. Due to the numbing medicine used during this procedure, you may experience temporary pain relief afterwards that may last several hours. Once the numbing medicine wears off, however, your pain will most likely return. The medication may give longer lasting pain relief and usually begins working after 24-48 hours.

The first step of the sacroiliac joint injection treatment is applying a local anesthetic to the treatment area. This helps to relieve any discomfort that may occur during the injection process. Once the skin is numbed, an injection will be administered into the sacroiliac joint. You will need to have someone drive you home after the procedure, but you will be able to resume most normal activities immediately following your appointment. Any soreness or bruising from the injection process should fade in a few days.
