All You Need to Know on Trigger Point Management: Causes, Types, and Treatment
Trigger Points
Trigger points are areas of muscle that are painful when pressed and can cause referred pain, or pain that is felt in different parts of the body. They are commonly found in the muscles of the neck, shoulders, and upper back, but can also occur in other parts of the body.
Causes
The causes include muscle overuse, muscle strain or injury, and poor posture. Stress and tension can also contribute to the development of trigger points.
Types of Trigger Points
Active and Latent.
- Active trigger points are areas of muscle that are currently causing pain or discomfort.
- Latent trigger points are areas of muscle that may not be causing pain at the moment but have the potential to become active and cause pain in the future.
Treatment
Treatment for trigger points may include massage, stretching, and other forms of physical therapy. Over-the-counter medicines are also prescribed to manage pain.
In some cases, trigger point injections, which involve injecting a small amount of anesthetic or other medication directly into the trigger point, may be used to help relieve pain.
